Spitfires on Trial

Southampton sends its first batch of juniors to the RPDC trials.

Over the last few seasons Southampton Spitfires have had several players turn out for the London Broncos (formerly Harlequins) scholarship sides. These have included Oli Johnson (u20s), Laurence Warren-West (u18s) and Georges Berthonneua (u18s).

Oli Johnson came the closest to making it to Superleague with his stint in the Under 20s which is one age group below Super League. These players did well considering the little amount of time they have spent playing rugby league.

In order to produce our first Super League Player the club needs to get the players into the system at a much younger age. That is why this season the club sent 4 players to the Rugby League Player Development Centre (RPDC) trials. The players who all attended the trials on Monday at Roehampton were:

Under 13s

Gary Smart (Southampton Spitfires & Tottonians)
Daffyd Gorry (Southampton Spitfires & Eastleigh Pirates)
Kieren O Driscoll (Southampton Spitfires & Eastleigh Pirates)

Under 14s

Ben Thorne (Southampton Spitfires & Tottonians)

The players who are successful will find out at the end of the month. If they make the cut they may be joining Spitfires Head Coach Glenn Tyreman who is waiting to see if he will be coaching on the RPDC this season.
