With the 2014 season coming to its peak running into the finals, the Spartans u14s haven't had a lot to write home about.. With a few cancelations from teams and extra weeks without playing the Spartans managed to get some extra time on the training pad with Louis, Tom & Chris to finalize and fine tune a few aspects of their game to enhance their overall performance..

With the final upon them and the return fixture of Spartans v Scorpions, this seasons calendar thriller it all promised to be an event of great expectations.

This certainly was the case and the Spartans looked to banish disappointments of not quite being able to supress the mighty Scorpions in all encounters. With the Spartans pumped up and ready to grab their last chance of victory in 2014 the whole camp of coaches, players and parents all came together for support in this vital finale which could see the young u14s become crowned Wales Junior Conference Champions.

With referee Mr Viv Taherne policing the match the contest opened up with the Scorpions posting points first as they flew out the blocks with a real intent. Spartans lack of concentration was short lived as they sprang into action for a hit back score of their own.

As the first half progressed it was clear the Spartans had ideas of controlling the Scorpions style of play. Superb ruck speed in offence proved a real problem for the Scorpions defence as the Spartans middle broke tackles which found pack support runners finding quick PTBs and quick hands for quality field position.. This resulted in further scores posted by the Spartans u14s as they looked to take a strangle hold on possession and territory.

The second half saw no change or let up in attitude from the young Spartans as they looked to consolidate their dominance of the current champions. Memories of 2013 and losing out to the Scorpions at 13s fuelled the enthusiasm to finish the job and book a place in the hall of fame for Wales Rugby League Junior Champions. With energy levels increasing at the excitement of the prize Spartans really started to play in a way that utilized the whole field and involving most of the field positions to tie up the opposition defence. The captain Joe Meluish lead from the front and was a outstanding in his pursuit for victory by leading the group to find a tempo that would eventually overthrow the current champions..

With a number of scores the Spartans took full control. All players contributed vital roles in securing a foot hold in what would take them a closer step to victory. Forwards, Halves, the three quarters and the back three all played with real threat going forward, but had to contain a Scorpions comeback as the current trophy holders rallied to keep their hands on the silverware. A much improved energy saw the opposition score a consolation try, but the Spartans never looked as though they were about to let the opportunity slip and big defence took them home to secure the prize

It will only be twice within the last 10 years a Cardiff junior side in Rugby League has managed to reign supreme against strong opposition outside the capital, and history may well indicate that it has only to date been done twice by the capital. Hopefully the Capital can grow stronger and who knows what 2015 has in store for the city we all love Cardiff..
