John Morris Cup Walker Cricket Ground Holtwhites Trinibus, Southgate Compton, Old Elizabethans, Botany Bay, Enfield, Cockfosters Edmonton

Children from the London Borough’s of Enfield and Barnet turned out en masse on Sunday as Southgate Adelaide Cricket Club hosted the John Morris Cup at the historic Walker Cricket Ground.

Named after a local gentleman and ex Adelaide chairman, John Morris, who was instrumental in the development of youth cricket, many local sides attended the event. A crowd of over 300 people bathed in the sunshine as the six a side tournament was played throughout the day with Holtwhites Trinibus winning both U11 and U13 tournaments, with Enfield (u11) and Southgate Adelaide (u13) the runners ups.

The Walker Ground was left in Trust by the famous Walker family for “sport to be played evermore by the people of Southgate” and to see so many children playing sport is a credit to all involved in the ground. Adelaide chairman Dan Whiting said, “We have a responsibility here in the heart of the community and we are proud of our heritage. It is exactly what the Walker family would have wanted. I am sure that everyone who attended had a fantastic time and we saw some excellent games of cricket being played. The standard was very good.”

Tournament Organiser Richard Ellwood added, "It was great to see so many children from the local area playing in the tournament. I'd like to thank all coaches managers, players, parents and member of Southgate Adelaide who made this day such and enjoyable day for all, without them this would not be possible. The children get so much from this tournament and you can see the improvement in the players as the matches went on. We are looking to increase the tournament size next year and get more clubs and more children from the local area involved in such a great day. Thanks to Holtwhites Trinibus, Southgate Compton, Old Elizabethans, Botany Bay, Enfield, Cockfosters and Edmonton for making this day so special.
