South Godstone FC history

The village of South Godstone originated when the Railway was built at the end of the 19th Century. South Godstone Football club was originally formed in 1900 and the team consisted of local people who lived in and around the village who were employed by the railway or on the local farms. The club was disbanded at the start of the Second World War in 1939 but re-formed again in 1948 due to the efforts of Joe Bowditch and Den Martin our current president.

The club played opposite ‘Sam’s Café’ (which no longer exists) on the A22. If you looked across the road from the RSPCA centre you would see the area where the club used to play. The players would meet in the Railway public house and walk to the pitch or board a coach for an away fixture.

In 1964 a sports pavilion was built at Lagham road and the football club moved to this site to be part of the village sports association. The club celebrated its 50th year since being reformed in 1999 with a charity match against a Crystal Palace vets XI which was managed by Steve Kember.

The club has always played in the Redhill District Football league and was a founder member of the Sunday section.
