Leics take the next step
The Mercury didn't seem too keen to publish the County report - so here it is instead.
Leicestershire take the next step on the road to Twickenham
Leicestershire County Rugby squad triumphed 43 -12 over Buckinghamshire in the second round of the County Championship Shield at Vipers RFC.
Fielding virtually the same starting XV as against Essex - the only changes being Syston’s Adam Davey replacing team mate Paul Walsh, while South Leicester duo Simon Johnson and Keiron Collins took their place on the replacements bench.
Playing against the wind the County side took time to settle although they had the bigger Bucks pack under considerable pressure at both scrum and lineout. Only some sloppy handling and silly mistakes let the visitors off the hook, but eventually after the first quarter, things clicked and the County stepped up a gear. Captain Luke Coltman (South Leicester) was driven over from a rolling maul after stealing a Bucks lineout throw. Mark Lord (South Leicester) converted. Centre Ryan Oakes (Hinckley) scored the next try off a first phase attack as the Bucks defence was split wide apart. Again Lord added the extras.
A penalty try and the associated yellow card was awarded against the visitors by the referee as the Leics pack again demolished their opponents.
Lord’s conversion was a formality to take Leics into a healthy 21-0 lead minutes before half time. However, Bucks came back with a converted try just before the break having also missed a long range penalty attempt.
Half time: Leicestershire 21 pts Buckinghamshire 7 pts.
Leics struck again immediately after the break with winger Kris McFedries (South Leicester) jogging over after some excellent attacking play from forwards and backs alike. Lord added the conversion and added a penalty on the hour. A raft of changes enabled all the Leics replacements to take the field and for a while Bucks had the upper hand as the changes caused some organisational disruption. Bucks scored an unconverted try, but Leics came back with Ben Avent (Hinckley) going over and Oakes adding his second try, which he converted himself, just before the final whistle.
Final score Leicestershire 43 pts Buckinghamshire 12 pts.
The squad now travel to Kettering next week for the final group game versus the East Midlands who lost their game in Essex 13pts to 5.
If Leics win that game they guarantee themselves a home semi final the following week – venue to be decided.
