Well, it was nice to see so many keen and eager faces turn up to Church Fenton CC for the first match of the season. But many were very unprepared, lacking jumpers and skins for the chilly April weather. Fenton is not one of the warmest grounds we travel to either!
The match started well with SMCC winning the toss and choosing to bat. Captain Alex Ward
and Joseph Barr put on a good total of 34 for the first wicket in just 6 overs. Soon after, Alex retired to the pavillion after reaching 30, allowing new players Harry Jackson
and Hannah Poulter
to take to the wicket to sample the bowling. Finishing on respectable scores of 21* and 19*, SMCC was led to a 95 for 1 total.
What looked like it could be a good win for the first match of the season soon turned to the players running off the pitch heading for cover in the changing rooms, when a light drizzle of rain turned into hail stones.
Unfortunately the match was abandoned, but we have high hopes for the team this year and we hope they will continue a run of good cricket!
