Back to the cold, grey & windy days that has so far characterised this season after last weekends scorcher. Two good pieces of news to start the match, Jonathan Mills won the toss and Leos hero from last week, Stuart Cobbett , wasn't playing. Stuart had scored 157 no last week at home against Saxton and hit 11 sixes. What he could have done at the much smaller Swan Croft didn't bear thinking about.

After last weeks fine performance Andrew Clark opened the bowling and proved it wasn't a fluke. Straight on a good line and length he looked to be giving the Leos openers problems. So it proved when he bowled Shayan Siddique with the score on just 16.

James Nijjar came in at #3 and despite been just 15 played some lovely drives. He has played at schoolboy level for Derbyshire where is at school. Together with Chris Huby they built a useful 48 run partnership. It wasn't till Huw Oeppen came on to replace Clark that they looked in any trouble. Huby giving a catch to Milford skipper Mills.

Huw even with the benefit of the early wicket never settled and after 4 overs was replaced by Steve Hall. Together with Adam 'Elmer' Gee he set about breaking the Leo 3rd wicket partnership between James Nijjar and Calum Earley.

In fact at the drinks break Old Leos were looking pretty comfortable the score was 106-2 and both batsmen were well set. There must have been something a bit special in the orange juice because soon after the re-start Steve made the vital break thru by getting Earley stumped by Paul Hebden for 31. Early's partner Nijjar was out the following over for a innings best of 35. It was then that the Leos batting collapsed with Adam picking up 3 wickets in his 7th over. That made his figures a heck of a lot better, rather than 0 for 23 off 6 he was now 3 for 23 off 7.

Steve Hall joined in the fun and we managed to take the last seven Leos wickets for just 31 runs. Only Nick Boyce offered any resistance in the lower order with a brisk 14. To compound Leos problems they also had two runs deducted when the batsmen were warned a second time for running down the middle of the wicket.

Earlier in the season we had let teams scrape valuable match winnings runs late in the innings but today we were ruthless. Steve Hall bowling the last two Leo batsmen to leave them 147 all out. (Careful Steve pinching Elmers rabbits) His final figures were 4 for 20, a season best, which just pipped Adam with 4 for 39. An added bonus was we had 8 of Old Leos overs in which to knock them off.

Teas today were provided by the Morley family and certainly did us proud. A fine selection of open sandwiches were on offer but it were the scones & cakes which stood out. A delicious looking chocolate cake, made by Abbey, was on offer, and by the look of Grace's lips tested to destruction, but the lure of fresh cream & strawberry scones was too great. I had a couple with my tea and took a third back to the score hut for company......

The weather certainly hadn't got any warmer for our innings and with the easterly wind blowing straight into the hut it was thick sweater and electric heater on. A nice steady start was required to stop any hope Leos had of pinching the win.

Jonathan Mills and Adam Kinghorn opened the batting and Adam's rotten run of form continued as he was out LBW for a golden duck the 2nd over of the match. Jonathan soon followed and we were 16-2 in the 7th over.

This season our batting has looked far from convincing and we needed a bit of luck and Dan White and Stuart Morley to play sensibly. We got both, a couple of edges off Dan's bat found the gaps in the Old Leo slip cordon and both batsmen dug in. At times it seemed they were in competition to see who could wear out their front pad first.

Though the strike rate was low it was nothing to what we had heard from the second team away at Garforth PC, Jonathan Barr had managed a glacial innings of 8 runs in 74 balls. Thankfully things were a bit livelier here.

Both Stuart & Dan battled on and the total slowly crept up, just when we seemed to have got on top Stuart holed out to a relieved Old Leos fielder for 10. Wicket keeper Paul Hebden was next in and with respect to his remaining team mates was in my opinion our last hope of picking up the win. Together with Dan he would have to get us as close as possible to the finishing line.

Paul started to find the boundary which forced Old Leos to open up the fielders a bit. This benefited Dan and he was soon scoring at a good pace. Some times you have to do the unglamorous stuff to get the win and today Dan did that. It will never go down as one off his most fluent and stylish innings but it was what was required on the day. A defiant, stubborn, grinding and at times fortunate one that along with Paul won us the match.

Unfortunately for Dan he just missed out on the much deserved half century when he was adjudged LBW for 48 but the match was won by then, Huw Oeppen had the honour of scoring the winning run with Paul Hebden 59 no at the other end.

An excellent win and against the form book, Old Leos had been 2nd in the league before today's match. It proves if we can hold sides to reasonable scores we can knock them off.
