Southport 3rds 60 – 24 Merseyside Police
It’s always a pleasure to welcome the Police to Waterloo Road – Especially when they arrive at normal speed with their primary objective to play Rugby – (Rather than ask Parky to turn his music down – Or escort Jimmy “The Knee” away for D&D!!) But with Southport strengthened with a squad of 20 players, hopes were renewed and focused on another win at home. Especially young Luke, who was celebrating his birthday.
After the warm up, the squads stood on their respective half’s of the pitch up awaiting the toss-up, both ready to let Battle Commence!! The travelling squad was under equipped in numbers, but had the drive and want delivered from the young back and older forwards to really give Southport a wakeup call in the first quarter. Although Southport seemed to dominate upfront, allowing opportunities ball to the backs through James ‘Doughnut’ Doran and the Silver Fox John Roberts. The Police closed down and boxed in well. However – Tiredness inevitability set in to the visiting team with no subs, which allowed Southport to open up a lead.
Tries came from mighty CHRIS CLODE, powering his way through from the back of a scrum left of the 22 and side stepping right to allude the defence. And his replacement in the second Half Neil Bailiff continued in the same vein to add his own try. A second try in consecutive matches saw Mark Garner-Jones increase his tally for the season before he got snagged by the long arm of the law to break his nose for the 22nd time!!!
Two tries each for John Roberts & Rik Potter – Roberts using caveman like raw direct power to smash through both time, the second occasion the Fox was semi held up on the line but eventually broke through the tackle with a wry smile. Potter in contrast tried a cheeky chip over the 22 with a flat defense and later capitalized on the overlap for his second after some well worked passing.
Joe Spencer’s try rallied the crowd as he took the ball 2/3rds of the way up the pitch and dropped the hammer unbelievably to outpace the defense by a good 5 yards by the goal line.
Mike Sheard also notched up a try with great support play as did the young Billy Nicol with one of his first touches, breaking through the line 10 yards out and side stepping through the forward defence. Billy also got 4 conversions and a penalty kick, post Mike Goodwins 1st half penalty.
During the mealy the Police fought hard and took 3 tries in the second half with great moves in the half backs.
Our best wished go to Mike Shaw who dislocated his shoulder in the first half and was hospital bound. However – Having a team top cut of you and then pictured on your facebook page is by all accounts admission of stupidity - Prepare to be invoiced! Get better soon mate. You had a great first 8 minutes!
