A message from club president Peter Klein

I had the pleasure of representing the club at the funeral of an old South Saxon; and when I say old ….. she was born in 1913!

If there ever was someone with hockey in their blood it was Barbara West.

During her 100 years she:

  • started playing in 1925 and retired 60 years later
  • played for England touring NZ and the USA
  • had a game abandoned when a German fighter strafed the pitch
  • was a player, umpire and coach and taught hockey at Chelsea College
  • played for Saxons for 20+ years
  • was a Vice President of the club

Bar is a shining example of a lifetime’s dedication to the great game of hockey.

I just wish I had taken more time to talk to her.

Peter Klein
President
South Saxons HC
