Southside Star Cubs U7 v Brockworth U7
Our U7 Cubs lined-up for a rematch with Brockworth on a beautiful sunny day - in sharp contrast to the first time we played them!
We had a squad of 10 for the day, for a match that was played in 10-minute quarters. In goal we had Jake S for 3 of those quarters, with regular keeper Lennie wanting to play outfield, although he did fill in for the other quarter.
At the back, we had Sam and Trey looking to provide the keeper with some protection, although Teddy, Lennie, Jake S and Reuben all took turns at the back too. In midfield, George and Freddie were the constants, with Teddy, Reuben and Jake M also putting in shifts there. Adam played up front, looking to add to his 2 goals from the previous encounter, with Jake M also having a run-out up front at the end.
Instructions before the game were to play the ball down the line, play the ball wide from goal-kicks and not to pass the ball into/across the middle. Of course, all that was soon forgotten as soon as the game kicked-off! We did though boss the game right from the off and there were several scrambles in and around the opposition penalty-area, one of which resulted in George firing the ball home from close range after some tenacious work from Adam.
Brockworth fought back and Jake S made a good save from a long-range effort, turning the ball around the post for a corner. Sam and Trey both made good clearances as Brockworth looked to break, before the Cubs added a second. Freddie fired across a fierce cross from the left, which a Brockworth defender, racing back towards his own goal, could only help into his own net. George claimed the goal in true Harry Kane style, saying that the ball had touched his foot on the way in! Definitely one for the dubious goals panel, but it was George’s name that went on the scoresheet!
The second quarter continued in much the same vein, with the Cubs doing most of the pressing. Reuben was brought down for a free-kick around 15 yards out, with George’s resultant shot being charged down. When Teddy was brought down a similar distance out shortly after, George made no mistake this time as his shot arrowed into the top-left corner. For a hat-trick?! We were again solid at the back, a couple of dangerous looking corners the only time we were really troubled.
For the 3rd quarter, George, Teddy and Lennie were all rested, and we certainly missed their energy. For the first time, Brockworth came into the game and were rewarded with a goal from a well-struck free-kick, that gave keeper Jake S no chance. They had further chances too, but another good save from Jake and a block from Reuben snuffed them out. We had one or two moments in their box too, with Adam determined to find the net, but he was snuffed-out each time by a cluster of defenders.
For the 4th quarter, Jake M was given a run up front, and within a few seconds he had scored a goal! From the Brockworth kick-off, he chased down the ball, won it, took it round a defender and slotted it home, like he had been playing there all 7 years of his life! The opposition looked to respond and twice were thwarted by late tackles from Lennie, who only avoided a yellow card because the referee had left it in his car! With the game entering the final few minutes, the Cubs put the seal on a fine performance with an excellent goal from Freddie, who fired home a cross-shot into the bottom left corner after clever work by Teddy.
This was another good showing from our U7 Cubs, who again showed signs of real potential. Everyone played well, with Freddie taking home the man of the match medal for his all-action display plus a fine goal, with special mentions too for Jake M and George.
Next-up for the U7s is a tournament at Quedgeley on Sunday May 20. I have entered 2 teams for that, so please let me know your availability asap.
