Southside Star Cubs U7 - Quedgeley Tournament
There was great excitement as our U7 Cubs prepared for their first ever tournament, on a very hot and sultry morning in Quedgeley!
We entered 2 teams on the day. The Lions were managed by Ben ‘Niffy’ Norman, whilst the Tigers were managed by yours truly. In the Lions team we had Lennie, Sam, Trey, Reuben, Freddie, Noah, Filip and Charlie, whilst in the Tigers team we had Riley (on loan from our U6 Cubs) Teddy, Oliver, Jake S, Jake M, Adam, George M and George Q.
The Lions started slowly and went down 1-0 in their first game, a scoreline that could have been worse, but for a fantastic display in goal from Lennie, who made save after save. The 2nd game we came up against a good team from Hucclecote and went down 3-1; the Lions battled well, Filip in particular, and it was he who scored a consolation goal when he fired home a penalty.
The best performance and best result of the day came in the 3rd game, versus Lakeside. The whole team really came together for that one, with goals from Noah (against his old team) and Trey sealing a 2-0 victory. Charlie played very well in this one, with Sam and Reuben solid in defence. Trey played so well that he was scouted by Cheltenham Town! The 4th game was close, helped by 2 penalty misses from the opposition, with Noah saving one and the other fired wide. Freddie scored a good goal, but it was not enough to prevent the Lions slipping to a 2-1 defeat.
The last game was against the other team from Hucclecote, but this time there was no way past our battling Lions. After going in front through a fine solo effort from Freddie, the Lions fought manfully to retain their lead, most notably with great blocks and tackles from Trey and Lennie. Filip made a number of good saves, including one from a penalty. With time running out, the Lions had 1 or 2 dangerous looking breaks, and from the last of those, Freddie scored with a fine finish to seal the win, after being played-in by Charlie. It was a terrific way to finish for the Lions and was just reward for their efforts.
Good performances all round and hard to select a Lions man of the match, which in the end was shared by Filip and Noah.
For the Tigers, we got off to a flyer with a convincing 2-0 win in our 1st game. Oliver was playing in defence but surged forward to fire home the first goal, with Adam applying a cool finish to slot home the second. In truth, there should have been several more goals, with George M and Jake M both going close. Indeed, Teddy came off complaining at the end that he hadn’t touched the ball; Teddy being our goalkeeper for the game! Jake S stood-in as keeper for the 2nd game and had a very different experience, as we faced-up to a very good Quedgeley team. We conceded almost from the kick-off and then proceeded to let in 2 very soft goals, at which point it looked as if we were onto a hiding, but we didn’t let our heads drop and kept battling away, with Riley and George Q to the fore.
In our 3rd game, we played the other team from Lakeside, and having watched them beat the Quedgeley team who had beaten us so convincingly, I feared the worst. My fears proved to be unfounded though, as the Tigers gave their best display of the day. Jake M went in goal and produced several good stops, with Oliver and Jake S tackling and harrying anything that moved. Teddy was an absolute rock in midfield and it was he who scored the game’s only goal, when he slid in to convert a cross from George M. Adam almost added a second near the end, but his shot was cleared off the line; no matter, the one goal was enough to secure a famous double over our old foes!
The next game was a frustrating one; it seemed we had taken the lead early on with a thumping goal from distance from Jake S, only for the referee to pull the play back for an earlier foul. The game ebbed and flowed but seemed certain to end scoreless, only for 2 goals in the last minute seeing us defeated. The last game was a bit of a goal fest, with Jake M quick out of the traps with 2 early goals; the first a good run and finish, the second a tap-in after a shot from Jake M came back off the post. Teddy then weighed-in with 2 more, the first following a through ball from Jake M, the second a thumping penalty after Adam was brought down in the box. We did concede a couple of late goals when our defence decided they wanted-in on the goalscoring action and forgot their defensive duties, but no matter, the game was well and truly over by then.
For the Tigers, top performances all round, with Oliver’s tremendous showing in defence just edging the man of the match honours.
For a first tournament, our Cubs did tremendously well, with some great individual performances as well as some really good team play. Overall it was 5 wins, 13 goals scored, 2 penalty saves and 2 victories over Lakeside! Not to mention the ‘flossing’ dance at the end!! Looking forward to the next tournament on June 9 already!
