Southside Star Cubs U8 - Cheltenham League Tournament 1 Week 1
Week 1 of the new season and our U8 Cubs were straight back into action in this league tournament played at Newlands.
With myself on a plane home from Canadian holidays, the overall coordination for the day was done by Ian Hepworth, many thanks to him for taking care. We had 3 teams entered in the tournament, the Lions, the Tigers and the Wildcats, proving that our numbers in this age group have been growing!
I don’t have too much detail from the day, but I can share what I have with you below …
For the Lions, Ian also did the management of this team and his squad for the day consisted of Teddy, Charlie, Brendan, Farid, Adam and Oliver S. It seems they were drawn in a very tough group and unfortunately didn’t manage a point or a goal, and very bizarrely it seems they were involved in a game that lasted 22 minutes, when games are scheduled for 10 minutes each! Although results didn’t go their way, I’m told that all players kept on battling to the end, but man of the day went to Adam for strong performances in both midfield and attack.
For the Tigers, Matt Middlecote kindly stepped-up to manage the team, which consisted of son Lennie, Noah, Oliver C, Trey, George M, Kaiyan and Seb. Although they lost the first game to a single goal, they rallied well and won the next 3. They scored 7 goals in the process, Trey grabbing one, with George netting the other 6 and not surprisingly, also claiming the man of the match award, although it was a very good team effort from all.
For the Wildcats, it was Jim MacWhirter who kindly came forward to manage the team, and in his squad was son Jake, Sam, Jake S, Reuben, Freddie and new signing Harry Winter. The team got off to a flyer with a thumping 4-0 win, with 2 goals each from Jake M and Freddie, then lost the next 2 games which were both closely fought. They finished with a battling 1-1 draw in the last game, courtesy of a strike from Jake S. Man of the match went to Jake M, but again good performances all round.
I’m sure it was not easy for the Cubs to be thrown straight into a tournament after their summer layoff, but I’m sure they all enjoyed the day and it will have been great experience for them. What’s more, they get to do it all again this week!
