No Show Brian
On a sunny day in South London, a fine band of Lancers set off on the long journey to Ashford with talk dominated by the promised wrath of STORM BRIAN. It was hard to imagine the fury that awaited them in the sunshine of Peckham and the Lancers set off in high spirits after a good week of training, feeling confident they could come back with a win.
After a LOOOOOOOONG journey to the ‘International' town, the skies started to darken and during the warmup BRIAN broke with all his fury. Dumping a torrent of rain upon the unfortunate Lancers for up to 3 minutes. He then decided he couldn't really be bothered and the carefully devised game plan to deal with the conditions went out of the window as kick-off approached in glorious sunshine. It looked like Brian wanted to see some RUGBY.
So in pleasant conditions the game kicked off, unfortunately the Lancers didn't notice and immediately let Ashford make their way down the pitch and swiftly score a simple try. RUGBY is a very easy game if the opposition don't tackle. Conversion kicked 7-0.
However this spurred the Lancers into action and they had the best of the rest of the half. They kept possession well and got themselves in position to take advantage from an Ashford offence. Ollie confidently stepped up in Light Breeze Brian to knock over the kick 7-3. The pattern repeated itself several minutes later but this time Slightly Stronger Wind Brian made things awkward and he missed. Still 7-3.
It wasn't all one-way, and a very good game was being had by both sides, as Ashford exerted some pressure of their own. However, the Lancers scrum was dominant in the first half and achieved a turnover. From their own 22 Southwark went through multiple phases to work their way up the pitch and after sustained pressure Callum found a gap to dive over. Ollie nailed the conversion in Barely Trying Brian. 7-10.
Some more RUGBY happened and Ashford got a penalty. 10-10.
At half time the message was that the Lancers had probably been the better team and could push on to win. The last Breaths of Brian had faded away and everything was to play for.
So the second half kicked off and a stalemate ensued. Ashford started to make inroads but the Lancers defence, so culpable for the first try, was now a wall. Tackling across all positions was halting Ashford and it looked like the Lancers would weather the storm (not Brian). Unfortunately, a BIG HIT from Ollie on one of Ashford’s large centres left him coming off worse and going off with a concussion. From the ensuing scrum, Ashford’s 9 found a gap and their excellent kicker nailed the conversion 17-10.
Without the calm influence of Ollie at 10, Ashford were now able to take control of the game. Every time pressure was exerted in their half, they held firm with their scrum now getting some joy and the box kicking of their 9 pushing the Lancers back. Solid defence meant there was never a threat to the Lancers try-line but Ashford’s kicker punished two bits of ill-discipline (one from just inside the half) to take the score to 23-10.
It was a disappointing result for the Lancers from an excellent game, which was closer than the scoreline suggests. Ashford are a good side who will push all the teams in the league and Southwark have plenty to take from the game. After a disappointing start to the season, a core of players are now starting to come together and are looking to move up the table.
MOM - Frank for being everywhere and tackling everything
DOD - Ollie for lying offside, playing the ball and arguing with the ref while being told that he was lying offside and must not play the ball. The ref won the argument by giving us a penalty.
SOD (Storm of the Day) - Brian for not showing up at all.
