SBU was proudly merged from Brincliffe and Southwell in 1998 and has been thriving ever since and is now more eventful than ever. This season, as well as being a talented bunch at hockey, we have had socials such as pub golf, winter and summer balls at the rugby club, grand national and world cup sweepstakes and soon a Zumba extravaganza at the rugby club. We train every Wednesday evening at the Minster School, junior training (boys and girls) from 6pm to 7pm and senior training (yr7 girls and above), from 7pm to 8:30pm.
We have three ladies hockey teams which range in skill level, but are all friendly and inclusive groups of women. We have matches typically on a Saturday morning, a great way to have a bit of fun while staying healthy. We play in divisions of the highest standard for the local area as reflected by our hockey skills but above all are an incredibly welcoming bunch for those with all skill levels.
I can say that as a 17-year-old member of the hockey club, the seniors of the club are fabulous and always offer constructive criticism in a motivating way. Our fantastic defender Fiona said SBU was: "A great club with friendly and supportive members, regardless of ability! Brilliant for a mum trying to juggle family life while continuing to play hockey."
I totally encourage anyone who wants to get out of their comfort zone with exercising and increase their confidence in team-sports to join this amazing club which offers a completely supportive experience. I hate running with my whole being, but for some ridiculous reasoning I love turning up to matches every Saturday and being part of that accepting community. We are always looking for new members so why not come at the start of September and join our Hockey family.
