Southwell City were awarded Club of the year at the Newark and Sherwood Sports Awards and Review 2011.
The event held at Kelham Hall is the sixth to take place and celebrated the achievements of the district’s leading players, teams, volunteers and clubs.
Southwell City beat other finalists Norwood Park Golf Centre and Coddington Cricket Club for this coverted accolade.
The club achieved FA Charter Standard Community Club status, the highest award a football club can achieve, within a year or so of the successful amalgamation of Southwell City senior football club with Southwell United youth football club.
Each week Southwell City provide football across a wide spectrum of ages (8-50) for both men, boys and girls. They have 28 teams playing football with over 300 players being involved each week.
The mens’ team play in the Central Midlands league and are supported by a Reserves side, an U19 and two U18 teams. The veterans now have two teams playing on Sundays. The boys’ sides range from age 8-16 years and an academy for younger lads is planned. The girls’ teams have multiplied over the last few years to five from U9s to U18s. The club has sent community coaches to local schools with particular emphasis on girls football. This culminated in the first ever Southwell District schools football tournament for girls. This season the club also recruited their first female coach.
The club is very proud of their ongoing achievements and would like to thank all the volunteers, players, sponsors and supportive parents and families, without whose efforts none of this would be possible.
