Southwell St Mary's: A History

The Club was established in 1896 under the current name of Southwell St Marys FC. It was a Church team run by certain Church dignitaries of the time. However, very little is known of the Club's past in those early years and it is not until after World War II that the history of the Club becomes clearer.

After the War it was difficult to run a football Club, especially financially. St Marys got into difficulties and were desperate for a new kit. No money way available and the Church was not prepared to help. It was decided to have a raffle to raise money; however, the Church would not support "gambling' and told the Club that if the raffle went ahead then the Club would have to change its "St Marys' name. It appears that the Club was as strong willed and boisterous as it is now because the raffle went ahead and in 1950/51 the name was changed to Southwell Amateurs FC.

A few years later, around 1955, certain members of the Club decided to break away and form their own, rival Club. They resurrected the name Southwell City FC.

The Ammo's forgot about City, became members of the Newark & District League and remained so until the early 1970's when the league folded. They then became members of the Nottingham & Districts League for roughly 10 years before it merged with the Nottingham Spartan League, becoming the Nottingham Spartan & District League.

In 1996 this League also folded and the Club became members of the Midland Amateur Alliance.

Since then the Ammo's have gone from strength to strength under the leadership of local legend, Doug Crawley and following in his footsteps, current Manager Dave Scott. The Ammo's have won numerous trophies in their 115 years as a Club, including five in the 2009/10 season and this season made history by returning to their famous original name of Southwell St Marys FC.
