Great morale booster at Mersea Island

Southwold 22 v Mersea 12 Match report from our Chairman

When the going gets tough you can rely on Southwold’s old hands to step up and show the true meaning of team spirit.

Continued selection difficulties and loss of form made the visit to Mersea Island a must win game for the Southwold 1st XV. Personal pride and the honour of playing for the club was paramount in the minds of the players who turned around a losing streak with a gutsy performance against a big, raw Mersea team on Saturday.

A beautiful winters day and an excellent playing surface revitalise the ‘Wold’ as they strode into an early lead and dominated the first half. A 22-7 half time lead was followed by a period of control and constant pressure, but then against the run of play Mersea broke through to score with 15 minutes to go. ‘Wold’ then patiently ran down the clock and controlled possession to grind out a tremendous victory.

This was a terrific effort and sends an important message around the club – playing for a club like Southwold is an honour - and this team stepped up and showed their loyalty and true sporting character. We are all very proud of them.

It is wrong to single men out – but we must thank Rob Scarle who was playing his first game for the 1st XV for 10 years and did so because when the call came he stepped up – but so did they all.

Team: Ben Haddingham, Ben Balls, Pete Holmes, Darren Fisher, Piers Currie, Duncan Hume, Kev Kaley, Rob Scarle, Adam Smith (capt), Stuart Butler, James Alvis, Jonny Stephenson, Sam Webb, James Heal.

Well done lads – it was a real pleasure to watch the game at West Mersea. I agree with our Chairman, it was hard to single out players, but...I thought the front row was immense in both the scrum and carrying the ball in attack. Our second row gave everything against a big opposition and on more than a few occasions; we were able to put their scrum under immense pressure. The back row was awesome taking the ball forward, linking with our three quarter and in defence. Our halfbacks distributed and kicked the ball well. Our centres always looked dangerous and our wings made very good ground whenever the ball was moved wide and our full back always seemed to be in the right position in defence and his kicking out of hand was superb – although the up-and-under could have been a little higher.
Rugby is about teamwork, being confident in one’s own skills, fitness and always wanting to be on top of the opposition. For most of the game these traits were in abundance. I would like to have seen us move it wider at times along with creating different running angle to bring in the back row support; but things like this can only develop on the training pitch.
Well done lads – you made all the travelling supporters very happy. All the best for this weekend. I must send my apologies as I am caddying for my wife on a shopping trip to Bath!

    Gary the touch judge.

Well played the Wold! The team sheet only lists 14 players? An omission? An even more impressive result if not!
