Colts begin to show their potential
Winning their first EC Cup match of the season
With just a couple of players missing we were nearly at full strength for the first time this season. So confidence was high and boosted further by the arrival of new kit!
We couldn't have got a better start with Sam C scoring in the corner in the first 5 minutes after combining beautifully with Louie and Guy in a textbook exhibition of draw and pass.
5 minutes later we conceded a penalty on our 22 in front of the posts which Walsham duly slotted between the posts. Shortly after they were camped on our 5m line and eventually broke blind to run in a try which put them 1 point in the lead.
Tom Keeble, then slotted two penalties for us. One of which resulted from our kick and chase which Tom expertly jumped and caught on their 22. We were now looking a little more comfortable at 13-8.
Our pack were working well in the set pieces and getting us relatively clean ball but were not making the most of their ability around the fringes. The next try was a win against the head just outside their 22 and two quick passes away to give Guy Slade a staggered defensive line to exploit, which he did with his usual prowess side-stepping the full back for good measure.
At the end of the half TomK ran in a try wide on the left after some good phases of play. Half time score, 23-8.
Walsham came out of the blocks fighting in the second half and it took 15 minutes before Sam C deservedly ran in his second of the day which was duly converted by Tom K.
The opposition had definitely gone up a gear and our defence was being more challenged and despite looking ragged at times held up with some impressive hits - not always from the usual suspects. But our forwards started to gel and a series of pick-and-goes up the middle covering 25m gave Tom Cooper the opportunity to dart over the line under the posts.
At 37-8 we seem to take our collective feet of the gas and Walsham stepped it up impressively and in the closing minutes ran in a well deserved try of their own. It transpired that, though we had a relatively full squad, several were feeling under the weather with various ailments doing the rounds at schools so perhaps they are excused for not closing out the game in a more ruthless manner!
Our backs were impressive whenever they got the ball with TomK and Guy having particularly good games. Tom C and Charles distributed well. Our back row were outstranding in both attach and defence as always and our from five combined well to dominate the set pieces with Elliott having a particularly good game.
