Having had no game for six weeks it was to be expected that there would be some cobwebs in the performance and so it proved. The bitter wind also contributed to a game where both sides made far too many handling errors.
West Norfolk kicked off and mounted a sustained period of pressure inside the Spalding 22, however, a succession of handling errors by both sides contributed to a stalemate situation until Corey Lewis gathered the ball and set off on a run from his own line which was only halted when he put his foot into touch on the West 10 metre line. Spalding then sustained the attack despite a number of errors, until a clearing kick by West was fielded by Corey Lewis on half way, he then made a looping run down the left hand touch line to score a try in the corner which went unconverted.
From the restart, Spalding set up a scrum position in midfield from which Alex Worth broke clear only to lose possession at the resulting ruck. West made several attempts to pierce the Spalding defence until eventually they fumbled the ball and it was pounced on by J. J. Faulkner who made ground before passing on the Alex Worth who went over in the left corner. Again the try was unconverted.
West then mounted an attack which resulted in them being awarded a penalty, Spalding failed to retire the requisite 10 metres and the award was moved forward and into range for West to slot the kick over.
The remainder of the first half was punctuated with numerous handling errors from both sides and at half time the score was Spalding 10 pts, West Norfolk 3 pts.
The second half began with Spalding, now with the wind behind them, mounting a concerted period of pressure and Mark Hendy was unlucky to be held up just short of the line. Spalding handling errors then surrendered possession but West were unable to break clear, this resulted in a poor clearing kick which was gathered by Corey Lewis in midfield, he set off down the middle of the pitch and kicked ahead over the line for himself to follow up and score a try which Oliver Johnson converted.
From the restart a kick ahead by Oliver Johnson was well followed up and some good mauling by J. J. Faulkner allowed him to release Oliver Rees down the wing where he was forced into touch on the West 22. From the line out the ball was moved cross-field and eventually Mark Hendy forced his way over for an unconverted try.
Spalding were now firmly in charge of the game but were hampered by their own errors. A scrum on the West 10 metre line resulted in a series of drives from Alex Worth, who had been prominent throughout the game, and Tom Rollinson, the ball was moved left to Corey Lewis on the wing and he went over for a try which he converted.
Spalding then quickly pinned West back in their own 22, who, despite retaining possession were unable to gain much ground. With full time approaching, West tried once more, only for Corey Lewis to pounce for an interception and break-away try which Oliver Johnson converted to end the game.
