History

Sporting Widnes was offically born in late 2007, an idea conjured up by founders/players Rob Hitchmough and Matty Little, although these two alone cannot be credited exclusively with the formation of the team. A core of players got together initially to lay the foundations. Current players Ross Holman, Graeme Malcolm, Andy Lynskey, Chris Hurst and Dale Burrows among others started kicking a ball around Victoria Park field in a slightly organised fashion, pre-empting what would come next.

7 a side and 10 a side games would follow as Sporting Widnes began meshing as a team and recruiting players. A lot of players came and went but as we progressed more and more began to stick. The team began to come together. Obviously ups and downs followed, and at some point the chances are everybody had an arguement with everybody, but as the months went by the team looked more structured and more commited. We started taking subs and invested in training equipment, match equipment and a brand spanking new black and red kit.

Sporting have recently been competing pre season friendlies. Widnes Galaxy, Brookvale, MASFC, Oakwood FC and bitter local rivals Cheshire Rovers have all faced the Swids over the last few months.

Behind the scenes, from its inception the club was largely run by Little and Hitchmough. Everything from leading the trainings, to organising, to money taking to generaly busybody work. As the team grew however it became apparent more structure was needed and after several incarnations of management, Vikki Clark was appointed to look after Sporting's day to day running and under her the club has gone from strength to strength. Having always been a part of the team (legend has it she came up with the Sporting Widnes name, although Matty Little will disagree) it wasn't a difficult decision to make, and along with Little as the newly installed manager, Vikki has created a new, structured regime for the club.

Recently Sporting secured spoonsorship for the forthcoming season with Bar Reef of Widnes and a successfuly application into the Warrington Sunday League followed. Chris Hurst was installed as treasurer for the club and we are now looking forward to September.

So that's just a little bit about us, where we came from and where we wanna go! If you bothered to read this far then thankyou very much
