Club History
In 1990, the club was a local forerunner to move away from playing on grass pitches; this involved travelling to Stanley Park in Blackpool to play their home games on water-based Astroturf. Shortly following this switch, the Ladies’ 1st Team qualified for the North Ladies’ Hockey League at the end of the 1991/92 season.
Springfields H.C. then returned to Preston in 2000 when the University of Central Lancashire opened the Preston Sports Arena. In 2007, further links were forged with the university in which the club was re-named Springfields UCLAN H.C. However, the original name was re-taken in 2011.
Springfields’ is a fully integrated club were the men, women and juniors are all represented within the organisational structure. We have a loyal, dedicated coaching team and umpire base; in addition to representation on the committees of local and regional hockey organisations.
The Club has nine teams: two men’s, four women’s, U16 girls’, U14 girls’ and U13 boys’ teams. Junior coaching and player development has been a feature of the Club for over 25 years and many young players have moved on to play for National League Clubs and international hockey.
The greatest success for the Men’s 1st Team came when they played in the Premier Division of the North Hockey Men’s League (NHML) in the 1996/97 Season; however the team currently plays in North Hockey Men’s League – Division 2 West.
In the 2009/10 season, the Ladies’ 1st Team became North Champions for the second time in three years and made history becoming the first side from the club to gain promotion to the National Hockey League. In the 2010/11 season they will play in the Womens Conference North Division.
We have a very strong youth development policy and run mixed U13 indoor coaching sessions on Wednesday evenings at Preston College for most of the year. These juniors form the base for our youth teams who play competitive hockey in local Sunday leagues.
We currently hold England Hockey's ClubFirst accreditation. This is awarded to well-structured clubs, whose volunteers hold correct qualifications/certifications and who are recognised as following all recommended guidelines within their youth development activities whilst maintaining successful links with the local community
