PRE-SEASON: Lytham Town 1-5 Squires Gate
Gate ended their pre-season preparations with a win away at West Lancashire League side Lytham Town
It was a frustrating evening for Squires Gate in their final game of pre-season before the start of the 2018/19 season on Saturday. Gate dominated the game throughout but despite plenty of possession, couldn't test the goal keeper. Gate's really found their rhythm in the last twenty five minutes of the game scoring three goals in thirteen minutes.
Gate's first chance of the game came for Joe Booth. He closed down the Lytham back line and won the ball but fired wide from the edge of the box. Lytham's first chance of the game came after twenty minutes but a cross to the back post was headed wide by the late arrival into the box.
Gate made the breakthrough twenty-five minutes into the game through former Lytham striker Ric Seear. He won Gate a penalty after he was pushed in the back, inside the box. He handed the ball over to striker partner Gary Pett who made no mistake and buried the ball past the keeper to give Gate the lead.
Gate came close again after thirty six minutes when Joe Booth played a well timed ball through to find the run of Ric Seear but Seear was flagged just offside.
One of Gate's two trialist one show was next to create a chance for Gate and it ended up being the second goal. He'll be claiming it though his cross into the box took a nasty deflection that saw the keeper beat at the near post.
Brett Dawson and Joe Booth combined on the edge of the box on the stroke of half time but the latters shot was saved with the follow-up corner cleared by Lytham.
Half time: Lytham Town 0-2 Squires Gate
After several changes from Gate at half time, they want close to adding another goal a minute into the second half. A freekick into the box found Dean Ing who has already scored two headers this pre-season, but his header was over the bar.
Gate came close again when Brett Dawson and Matty Kay linked up with some nice one touch football around the box. Dawson's ball round the corner found Matty Kay's run but his shot inside the six yard box was well saved by the keeper.
Lytham went close in the sixty-second minute but put a great chance over the bar. They made up for it four minutes later when they were awarded a penalty for handball in the box which was put past Ben Fletcher.
Another penalty came later in the game for Gate to add a third goal. Trialist fouled in the box allowing Sub Ryan Riley to step up and fire the ball past the keeper for Gate's third goal.
Gate found the net again just eight minutes later. Ryan Riley played a lovely ball out to the right where Trialist, who claimed the first goal, burst into the box and fired across goal past the keeper.
Ryan Riley again picked out another key pass for his second assist a minute later when he found Joe Booth who rose highest to head past the keeper to finish the game for Gate.
Gate are next in action on Saturday when they start the new season, away at Silsden.
