STA300

STA300 were back at the coal face on Saturday and ground out a win against a very large Ashmolean team. They welcomed back former Captain Pete Elvy into the front row and with Mat Gill and Harry Toland, made for a formidable presence.
OAshmoleans opened the scoring with some slick hands down their back division and Captain Stuart Ruler thought that might be a sign of things to come. 5 - 0
He was rewarded however with excellent play from his forwards and his backs. The pack did the hard yards and the wet conditions suited a "kicking and letting them struggle with the catch" type of game, so this was more to the boys liking. The Gaelic lads all knew how to kick a ball and field a ball, so they would kick it out of any situation.
James Thompson slotted a penalty to bring the scoreline up to 3 - 5. St Albans applied more and more pressure on the Ashmole line and Shane Gill kicked an outrageous drop goal in front of the posts. 6 -5 .
Mr Gill, Sr. was very pleased.
The second half was a real tight run thing with both sides getting the ball in their possession and just failing to get over the line. Then Shane Gill made a massive kick up field that was chased up by his brother Mat Gill, who beat the dispairing cover and although hauled down just inches short, managed to reach out and touch down. 11 - 5
Mr Gill, Sr. was VERY PLEASED.
St Albans held their nerve till the end and came away with a great victory in terrible conditions. EVERYONE deserved to be Man of the Match, but Shane Gill may have just edged it with his direct running and his kicking game.
