Stanford U13s come up short

by Graham Loughran

Confidenece should have been in abundence but sadly that was not what was found when it came to kick off.

Concerns were there from the pre match warm, the team just didn't seem to have turned up and brought their A game.

Within the first 15 minutes Chingford had shown their good passing game and the speedy wingers out paced and spaced the Stanford defence. 3 Tries down and Stanford were most certainly fighting an up hill battle.

But one thing about this Stanford team is that they do have a large amount of determination and slowly they started to play some good rugby. The back line had to be reshuffled early on when Fly half Callum Newton aggrivated a leg injury and was unable to continue. Captain Zack Burdett stepped into the 10 position with Max Clarke move over to inside centre, Sam Smith coming in from Full Back and the welcome return of Rhys Dell after a very nasty cut leg stepped in to the 15 birth.

Stanford had flashes of the side they can be but these were too few and too often. One such move came right at the end of the first half. The Stanford Pack had been in a good contest with the Chingford Pack and scrum half Matthew Hook was distributing the ball with strong accurate passing. Hook passed the ball out to Burdett who drew his opposite number to off load to Clarke coming on at pace. Clarke was clean open with an over lap of Smith and Jake Tottman but he didn't use them instead he cut back inside and scored on the whistle of half time.

The 2nd half was much more of a contest, Chingford still worked the ball well to their wings but Ben Spurgeon was matching them with his good positioning. The Stanford props where now giving hooker Sean Loughran a good base and several balls were won against the head. Interchanging props Alfie Driskel, kieran claydon, Jarrod Williams and Jake Bothamley were very strong in the tight.

Flankers Jack Knight and Ross Gale were becoming more and more prominent Kinight was tackle everything that came his way with Gale make very hard yards into the Chingford strong defence.

Stanford's second try came half way through the second half when Marcus (The Maul) Edgeway chased down a Chingford back who panicked when he saw a raging Edgway. Throwing a loose pass Sam Smith was on hand to collect a perfect interception and ran in for a try.

Chingford on the day were the better side but Stanford still showed signs of promise.

Another day and another game, Stanford U13s need to learn from this outing and take the disappointment that they felt and use next time
