Stanford started the match with only 14 players and went down to 13 shortly after kick-off when fly half Alfie Edmeades suffered a head injury. Despite this, the home side showed determination and after Basildon scored a converted try, Michael Woods, now playing at fly half, scored a try after a powerful run, converted by captain Dan O'Flaherty.
Basildon scored again with a strong forward drive, but Stanford scored again after a long period on the Basildon line with second row Jack Enever smashed over from short range.
As half time approached, Basildon started to dominate the forward exchanges, and they scored twice before the break to make the score 12-24.

With the shortage of players taking its toll, the away side took total control of the scrum and ruck areas, and a few handling errors from a now tired home resulted in 5 more tries for Basildon, but in the last few minutes Stanford finished strongly and after a few minutes camped on the opposition line, second row Spencer Whan crashed over for the final score.
Although a 17-43 defeat on paper looks bad, Stanford fought hard throughout and with a full side the result could have been very different.
