Rugby returns to Tregorrick Park this Saturday with a bumper double header. The Sinners have a fascinating fixture against Saltash while the Saints try to put their close defeat at St Ives behind them with a fixture against a rapidly improving Tiverton side.
Tivvy currently lie in 9th place on 25 points but began 2018 with a promising 19 apiece draw against Wadebridge Camels. We all know what a difficult outfit Camels are to play against and any team that shares the spoils with them is a team that needs to be treated with the utmost respect.
Apart from a comprehensive defeat against Chard , Tiverton have been playing some decent rugby over the last 7 games. Always in contention, they have never lost a game in that period by more than a one score margin.
Saints were disappointed to lose their first game of 2018 at St Ives, which has seen us leapfrogged by Devonport Services, but there was a general acceptance that the performance was perhaps not quite where we wanted it to be and on balance the Hakes were deserved winners.
One great strength of St Austell rugby has always been the ability to take results on the chin, learn from defeats and work out a way to deliver the next time out. We have been concentrating on the areas where we felt we let ourselves down and looking forward to playing at Tregorrick Park again.
The Saints were victorious by 29-45 in the away fixture but it is fair to say that the scoreline does not reflect the effort that we expended in getting that win. I was really impressed by the Tivvy lineout and they scored a couple of lovely tries using their winger in a training ground move. It was very impressive.
With 2 games at home Sinners ko 2:15 and Saints 2:30 it should be great beginning to the home rugby new year. Why not get yourself up to Tregorrick and make some noise and cheer the lads on.... COYS !!!!
