St Austell have both senior sides in action for the second successive Saturday this week. Our Sinners will be looking to build on their great win against Saltash when they play Penryn at Tregorrick Park, ko 2:30, while Saints travel to Torquay having lost 2 games in a row since the turn of the year.
The Saints have been in scintillating form recently and it has been a year since they lost 2 games in a row. The Tivvy game saw an oddly lethargic Saints struggle to impose their normal high tempo game on a committed and organised opposition who delivered their game well and thoroughly deserved their win.
Players and coaches have been reviewing that performance and asking was this just a one-off or do we need to change our approach ?
I don’t believe we have become a bad side overnight. It is incredibly difficult for an amateur side to sustain that level of winning consistency week on week and I normally plan on a dip in form at some point through a long season. That doesn’t mean we can just ignore it and everything will come right. There were elements of our game which didn’t fire anywhere near our expectations and it reminded all of us that there are no easy games in this league.
Onto Torquay and a side who we have enjoyed some fantastic tussles with over the years. The past 2 visits to the Recreation Ground have seen the Saints lose both times in high scoring games. Tics have had an in-and-out season and currently lie in 11th place, flirting with relegation. Recent events against Tivvy have shown us that this means nothing, as before their win against Saints Tiverton were in a lower position that Torquay.
Sport is all about challenges and the ability to meet those challenges, Saturday offers a real opportunity to regroup and deliver a performance against a team desperate for a win themselves. It should be a fantastic occasion.... COYS !!!!
