Y7 just came up short against a very polished Hawkley team.
Y7 team can be very proud of themselves after a gutsy performance against Hawkley Hall in this cup quarter-final. Hawkley will probably go on to win this competition, and will not have a tougher match than this one. Our opening blitz took them by surprise, and we took the lead with a brilliant solo effort from Matty Fearnley. Hawkley then took control with some superb rugby skills and we hardly touched the ball for the remainder of the first half, turning round 24-6 behind.
Second half tries from Tom Entwistle, Lewis Rotherham, Ben Berry and another from Fearnley brought us within touching distance of a famous win. We outscored Hawkley by 4 tries to 1 in the second half, with Matty Fearnley kicking all 5 conversions in the game.
We were missing key players due to absence and injury, so our job was never going to be anything but tough. All 17 players contributed to a great squad efffort and can hold their heads high even in defeat.
Unfortunately, as this is a knock-out competition, this was our last competitive game of the season, so I will attempt to arrange some friendlies against other Wigan schools during the next few weeks.
Training will continue on Mondays after school.
Thanks again to parents and families for your support today and during the rest of the season.
