"Best performance of our season"
Magpies strike 6 past high flying Horwood
Steeple Claydon Football Club were victorious over their local rivals, Great Horwood Reserves, in a tie that keeps alive the chances of finishing within the top 4.
The game was always going to be a cagey affair with Great Horwood sitting towards the top of the table for the majority of the season and grinding out a 1-1 draw with Claydon at their home ground. The Magpies needed to bounce back after their poor defeat to Hanslope Reserves and made a bright start to the game, kicking into beautiful sunshine with a Gary Brigden left foot volley drilled hard and low into the back of the net.
Claydon doubled their lead shortly after when George Carpenter played in a lovely ball onto the on-running Grant Cole to glance a header passed the stranded Horwood 'keeper.
In the second half, Claydon didn't lift their foot off the gas with Jacob Hodgins bagging two in quick succession and Barrie Davies scoring another trademark header from another lovely Carpenter corner. Claydon hit the post 4 times and the bar once while player/manager, Dave Terry, came close with a left footed strike before George Carpenter chested the ball down from a Horwood goal kick, ran at the Horwood defence before slotting home the 6th goal of the game.
Player/Manager Dave Terry gave his thoughts following the game; "We could have had more today and we would have been worth it. It was by far our best performance of the season. Every one of the players who either started or came on played their part in a wonderful team performance. No one carried anyone else today and nobody hid out on the park today. I'm absolutely delighted.
I won't single out any player because I thought they were all fantastic but Grant Cole's first senior goal brought a massive smile to my face. His celebration just showed his passion for the club and the way the other players mobbed his was magnificent.
I'm hoping we can take this performance into the final 2 league games of the season and also into the Div 2 Trophy Final"
