U-13s Lose out in tight Match
Tonight Wednesday the U-13s entertained Hillhead CC at the Tryst in their first League Match of 2012 WDJCU Season
For those unfamiliar with the B League Cricket format a quick explanation which might also help when looking at the scorecards.
U-13 B League WDJCU matches are 20 overs per side - in Teams of 8
Each team bats in 4 pairs of batsmen (4x2=8) - 5 overs per pair are bowled
Runs are scored in the normal way and extras are awarded also but each time a batsman is out -5 runs are deducted and the batsmen change ends only - until the alloted 5 overs are bowled to them
Bowling - every player in the team with the exception of the wicket keeper must bowl - so all 7 outfielders bowl at least one over - maximum of 4 overs can only be bowled by any one bowler in an Innings
The overs are bowled in batches of 5 overs from the same end - then each 5 overs are thereafter bowled alternating the ends they are bowled at.
The team score starts at 200 and runs and extras are added to it. -5 times the number of batsmen that are given out are then deducted from the total to arrive at the Innings score.
The objective is to allow all players to participate in the match whether it be batting and either bowling or wicket keeping and fielding so it is very much designed as a participation match for all involved.
On the night Stenhousemuir batted first and scored 50 runs from the bat and were awarded 21 extras = 71 runs + the starting 200 = 271 however the batsmen were dismissed 11 times in total during the Innings so -5*11 = -55 needs to be deducted. 271 -55 = 216 runs in the Stenhousemuir Innings.
Top scorers were Callum Wallace with 12 and Craig McIntosh with 10.
In reply Hillhead scored 30 runs from the bat and were awarded 26 extras = 56 runs + the starting 200 = 256 runs. Hillhead batsmen were however only dismissed on 7 occasions during their Innings so -5*7 = -35 needs to be deducted. 256 -35 = 221 runs in the Hillhead Innings.
Pick of the bowlers was Blair Philips with 2 wickets for 5 runs, Jack Morton with 2 for 10 and a wicket each to Craig McIntosh, Jordan Renton and Callum Wallace.
So to the result
Hillhead 221 beat Stenhousemuir 216 by 5 runs
A tight match in every sense of the word with only 5 runs seperating the teams i.e. the value of 1 lost wicket.
Lessons to be learned for young Stenny - although we scored 15 runs more than the opposition we lost 4 more wickets (or took 4 fewer wickets when bowling) so +15 on runs -20 on wickets so we lost by 5 runs.
Man of the match is a tough call as there were several great performances - Craig McIntosh 10 runs & 1 for 5, Callum Wallace 12 runs & 1 for 12, Jack Morton 5 runs & 2 for 10. But on this occasion it goes to Blair Philips 7 runs & 4 overs 1 maiden 2 for 5. Well done Blair.
(Where the scorecard reads retired hurt don't despair all cricketers were returned unhurt to parents - I had to use this to indicate not out and get the scorecard to work for non 11 aside matches)
