Steyning Town played the first of their double headers against SCFL Premier Division side Worthing United on Saturday.

The first team put in a really encouraging performance for the majority of the 90 minutes and will feel very disappointed not to have taken something from the game given the number of chances they created. In the first half especially the front three of Levoi playing centrally and the rapid pace of Garrett on the left and Clark on the right caused our higher league opponents all sorts of problems. The midfield three of Towse, Dodd and McMahon all looked comfortable in possession , disciplined and competed well.

Our goal after 18 minutes came from a neat slipped through ball from midfield finding Garrett on the left who raced away and pull the ball back for Levoi to drill home from 12 yards out.

Worthing United continued their patient approach with neat build up play and created a few chances, however we also continued to carve out good chances.

As half time approached, we did lose our way and discipline for around ten minutes and during this spell Sampford could only parry away a low shot and the rebound was rolled home.

The second half, despite a number of changes, again followed a similar pattern with the Barrowmen employing a pressing game and hitting Worthing United with their pace once in possession, and Worthing playing a bit more of an intricate passing game. Chances came and went at both ends. For us Harding missed a few chances when well placed and Clark had a couple of glorious chances to put us back in front.

However it was the hosts who found the second goal as a deep cross was turned home at the far post in to the roof of the net.

That was how the score finished. A really good workout on an excellent surface. The only down side was a nasty injury to Harding who looks set to miss the first half of the season with ligament damage.

However with Captain Parsons, the influential Knowles and new signing Garman, Rose & Waller all sitting out, as well as good players in the Reserve squad, there is still plenty of strength in depth and quality to come back in to the side.

The reserves played their first friendly of the season, and with a number of new players being given their first opportunities their were lots of positives to take from a 4-3 defeat. A few defensive issues need to be addressed however the forward play was very good at times. The Barrowmen goals came from Woodland, Bilal and Gritt. Looks to look forward to as the season nears.
