On Saturday Town suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 3-2 at Little Common in what was often a very scrappy affair.

We came into this fixture full of hope of regaining top spot against a side yet to record a League win. Kris Harding was back in the side for Jack Boxall and Ash Towler also back with David Harris dropping to the bench.
Things started brightly enough with Town taking the lead on 7 minutes. A through pass found Chad Milner on the edge of the Common box who squared to Ryan Warr in front of goal, who made no mistake from close range. 1-0 Town.
Unfortunately the goal did not enable us to settle and, like our hosts, we frequently gave the ball away and made sloppy errors. As the first-half wore on it was Common who gradually took the upper hand with Jared Lusted and Martin Denny both going close before on 25 minutes a through pass sent Denny racing clear to drill past Aaron Jeal to level the score. 1-1.
Common remained in the 'driving seat' for a while and on 35 a foul by Ash Towler (yellow carded) resulted in a looping free-kick just missing the head of McInery in front of goal. A couple of minutes later though, we regained the lead. McInery fouled Ryan Warr deep in the Common half and Lewis Levoi lofted his free-kick straight onto Matt Dodds head who made no mistake as he nodded home. 2-1 Town.
Frustratingly, we let Common get straight back at us and on 40 minutes Lewis Hole levelled the score again. 2-2.
We had chances to regain the lead again before the break when Common keeper parried a good effort from Kris Harding and Chad chipped narrowly over from just outside the box. But just before half-time Aaron saved well with his boot from a close range shot from Hole. Half time - Little Common 2 Steyning 2
The second half was a very scrappy and quite tetchy affair at times with Ryan Warr's name also entering the book for a foul along with Common's McInery. Common always looked the more likely team to score with Hole hitting the upright with a header and Eldridge blasting a good effort just wide of target. John put Charman on for Warr and David Harris on for Harding but we couldn't break back into the game sufficiently but it did look like we would hang on for a point, until on 81 minutes Common sub Connor Burton found the botttom right corner of our net to put the hosts in front. 3-2 Common.
The introduction of Ollie Pickup for Chad was too late to make a difference and despite a late rally the hosts held on to seize their first win of the season and condemn us to our first defeat. But the wider picture says 9 points from 4 games! Full-time -- Little Common 3 Steyning 2
