The Barrowmen exited the Division Two Cup at the Shooting Field on Saturday

despite a spirited performance in a hard-fought 'local derby' against table-toppers Worthing United.

With keeper Aaron Jeal serving a suspension, Mike Abbott came in between the sticks. Tim Jones and Yoseph Assifi also came into the side at left-back and in central midfield respectively.
The match started with the visitors having most of the possession with Sam Blundell and James Wotherspoon looking lively up front and a few minutes in, a good block by Ash Finch prevented Blundell from putting them ahead.
Fortunately, despite their possession United did not create too many clear cut chances and as the half progressed we were able to get more into the game and on 22 minutes Chad Milner shot narrowly over from a good Kris Harding cross.
A couple of minutes later we went ahead when Lewis Levoi swept home from close range to put us in the 'driving seat'. 1-0 to Town!
The game then went 'end to end' with the defence working hard to contain United and us creating plenty of chances with Lewis shooting narrowly wide when just a few yards out, and Lee Early blocked by Worthing keeper Matt Grimstone when through 'one on one'.
On 39 minutes though, we really should have gone two up when awarded a penalty for a hand-ball. Lewis's kick was saved well by Grimstone, diving low to his left.
Just before the break, United got back into it when Jacob Schilt got on the end of a cross from Wayne Joseph to head in off the cross-bar to level the score. Half time 1-1.

The second-half did not start well for Steyning and five minutes in, a through-ball found Schilt who slotted past the advancing Mike Abbott to net his and United's second. 2-1 Worthing.

We did not let ourselves sink and continued to pursue the game with Chad and Harding combining well. On 66, we got our life-line when Ash Finch, looking suspiciously offside, got on the end of Matt Dodd's through-ball to lob over the keeper to level the score again. 2-2.

The score remained level for twelve minutes as United attacked. Blundell went close on two occasions as Joesph probed and on 78, United sub Mark O'Regan fired them into the lead again with a well taken goal. 3-2 Worthing. We seemed to come to life again after that and really could and should have leveled again.

Sub Callum Towse headed narrowly over from a Levoi corner, Matt Dodd was blocked on the edge of the box and Lee Early shot a whisker wide when through on goal after some very neat build-up play. But, it wasn't to be, however a hard-fought contest against a decent side, but how Steyning were left to rue those first half missed chances.

Final score - Steyning 2 Worthing United 3.
