Town's solid start to the new season continued in the Peter Bentley Cup on Saturday with a comfortable 4-1 win over Sidlesham.

In a game that was all but wrapped up by half time, Steyning made one change from the side that beat Midhurst the previous week with Jake Cockerton coming in for the injured Dom Taylor.

So, at a much cooler than of late Shooting Field we started brightly playing fluid attacking football with Harry Smith, Connor Bull and Chris Neatherway all again linking well up top . We were dominant and continually pressed with Cockerton getting forward well tormenting down the left. Rob Clark, Ryan Timms and Harry Smith all went close with good attempts before we took the lead on 29 minutes.

A neat through pass from Neatherway played in Smith who advanced to slip the ball low past the Sid keeper for 1-0.

Minutes later we were awarded a penalty for a foul on the persistent Clark. Zac Haulkham stepped up to coolly drill in the spot kick to double the advantage. Just before the break it got even better when Neatherway sprinted clear after neat build up play to bang in number 3.

Half time - Town 3 Sidlesham 0

Substitution - Callum Tower for an injured Haulkham.

The second half was a slightly different story with us taking our foot off the gas just a little and our visitors definitely starting to offer some threat going forward.

For us, young Johabi Maher replaced injured Cokcerton and put in an excellent good on his debut, hitting two good efforts only just wide of target, one where he possibly should have done better.

For Sidlesham, they created more late in the game and on 85 grabbed a consolation when sub Morgan Forry beat J J with a low strike from the edge of the box.

However, we had the last word when we gained another penalty for a foul on Harry Smith as he raced in to the area. This time Scott Faber stepped up to convert the kick, to open his account for the season, and well and truly wrap things up!

Yes a very good all round performance on the day and overall a very encouraging start to the season. 2 wins from 2! Great stuff! A good feature of the Steyning play was the hard work all round to win the ball back when we lost possession and the tenacity and bite in the tackle which allowed our visitors very little time to settle all afternoon.
