A superb second half performance from Steyning Town saw them ease to an ultimately comfortable win over local rivals Storrington FC.

Goals from Ozga, Bull, Neatherway and Hunter saw Steyning record their biggest win over their local rivals for many years and was just reward for a performance where overall they dominated the opposition. Storrington will be left disappointed at a slow start in either half. Ozga fired home from 12 yards in the first minute of the match as Steyning flew out of the traps, and Bull drove home sweetly from outside the box just 30 seconds in to the second half to make it 2-0.

Hunter and Neatherway both came off the bench and made a real impact in the final quarter. Neatherway was played through superbly by Hunter and cooly slotted past Swans keeper Elliot with his first touch, and minutes later the favour was returned as Neatherway turned neatly in the box and crossed low and hard and Hunter bundled the ball home to seal a 4-0 win.

The winning margin probably reflected the overall balance of play, however Swans were certainly in the game during the first half and went close on one occasion in the first half as the ball whistled past the post. The Steyning back three were stretched on a number of occasions before the break and Steyning after their early goal and dominance were becoming ragged and struggling to get their passing style up and running. The game became fairly fragmented and a number of fouls from both sides didnt allow the game to flow during this period. Steyning did however spurn a number of chances themselves in the first half as Timms shot over as did Bull, Gritt spurned a one on one as his chip floated wide. There was also a contentious moment as the ball spiralled in the air in the Swans box, Elliott on the back foot could not get near the ball as Ozga leapt above him and nodded home. As is the norm these days the keeper was over protected , and although I appeared he was not fouled in the slightest the referee O’Brien decided otherwise.

Half time 1-0 Steyning

Town came out with a renewed sense of purpose in the second half and Bulls low strike settled any anxieties and Steyning went on to totally control the half. Retaining great possession, moving the ball around quickly and winning the ball back with ease any time they lost it as they looked stronger and physically fitter as they out muscled and out moved their opponents. The win now never seemed in doubt and it was more a case of whether they could add to the score. Faber and Haulkham were winning the midfield battle and the back three of Gathern. Levoi and Timms certainly did not look like they were going to give away any cheap goals. Clark, Maher and Bull where all enjoying running from deep and getting in behind the Swans defence.

After subs Neatherway and Hunter scored the third and fourth Storrington did rally slightly and JJ was called in to serious action for the first time as he tipped a header on to the bar. That was pretty much the last action of the afternoon. A good result against a hard working Storrington side and Steyning go back to third in the table. Great to hear the lads celebrating in the changing room at a ground we have had our fair share of misery at over the years.

Some tough challenges ahead with Eastbourne Town in the cup on Tuesday night and then a huge trip away to league leaders AFC Varndeanians next Saturday. Not one to miss.

There was also a great performance from the reserves at The Shooting Field who overcame Littlehampton United by 3 goals to 1 in the intermediate cup. Littlehampton play 2 leagues above our reserves, however 3 goals from youngster Rafe Brooks gave the side a well earned excellent victory.
