Steyning Town finally returned to action with a tricky away match at Wick & Barnham United on Tuesday night.

It proved to be a tough opening period for Town whose lack of match action over the last three months was evident was they were some way off the pace. They had the returning Matt Evans in goal to thanks for some excellent early saves as the Steyning goal came under threat with wave after wave of attacks. Town had already had a couple of let offs when Newman headed home unchallenged from a whipped in corner in the 5th minute.

After this Wick hit the post from a free kick and missed a couple of half chances. In the 18th minute Pickup brought down Harper in the box, however the resulting penalty was palmed away by Evans low to his right much to the delight of the Steyning support. In the 25th minute Wick looked certain to extend their lead however the ball got stuck in the mud and sand in the goalmouth with the goal gaping.

As the half wore on Steyning started to get a foothold in the game and Bilal, making full debut after a step up from the reserves, created a couple of chances out of nothing but shot over when pretty well placed. Willmott was also making his debut after moving in to the area and signing from Hailsham, however he was getting little change from the hosts defence. As the half wore on Town looked more settled, and on 35 minutes centre back Greer rifled home from all of 35 yards in to the top corner with the keeper rooted. A goal out on nothing and a huge lift for Town as they went in at half time.

As a result they came out in the second half a much more positive team and looked more on the pace of the game and started to create real problems going forward. Gritt, who was Towns best performer on the night, was creating lots down the left with his direct running , and Dodd and Harris were starting to play some better football in the centre of the park. Mid way through the half Steyning had two goals disallowed in controversial circumstances. Firstly Gritt pounced on a sliced clearance and raced through with a delightful finish high in to the net. Bizarrely he was flagged offside even though it came off a Wick player. Then minutes later a Gritt header was deflected goalwards and the keeper scooped the ball out from under the crossbar however it touched the net, and clearly bounced over the line, but the linesman, not quite up with play, waved play on a Town players and supporters alike protested.

At the other end the front pair for the hosts still looked very lively and seemed to slice through the Town defence at will at times. Both forwards sliced wide in quick succession when played through, and then the dangerous Harper, back on Loan from Worthing, should have done better when heading against the angle of bar and upright when well placed.

The introduction of Towse gave Town a better shape and his neat passing quickly settled Town in to a more effective style. It was his late volley that whistled over, and Skipper had a great chance to seal points late on as he raced clear of the defence, however he shot far to early and sliced wide.

The game finished 1-1 ,and Wick will feel they spurned enough opportunities to win the game comfortably. Town themselves were pleased with a point after a horrible opening phase, and certainly improved as the night went on and had some good chances themselves to snatch all the points. With players still to return Town can look forward to a competitive last few months of the league season.
