3's Beat Lewes to End Losing Streak
Saint's 3's finally ended their 4 match losing streak with their first away win of the season at Lewes on Saturday
The game saw the welcome return of Colin Upchurch to strengthen the Saint's defence in what was to be a very even game at a sunny Southdown Club. Saints started well and their midfield of James Peel, Stewart Fuller, Angus Watson and Tim Upchurch moved the ball around well. Saints survived a series of Lewes corners but also had several chances of their own with Mark Butcher thwarted by some fine saves from the Lewes keeper.
The deadlock was broken when man of the match Angus Watson broke quickly from Saints half before Steve Branagan set up Butcher to score with a fine finish to give Saints a 1-0 half time lead.
Skipper Peter Fermer warned Saints that they had been here before and blown several games in the second half. Lewes started the second period well but could not break through thanks to some fine defending by Rob Bridges, Martin Feltham and Colin Upchurch. When they did get a shot on goal keeper Richard Foulger kept them out.
As Lewes tired Saints had several chances to finish off the game but these were spurned and it was not until 5 minutes before the end that Jamie Gustard added a second goal to seal a fine 2-0 win for Saints.
