Saturday 31st July 2010
St Ives Roosters 18 Northampton Demons 44
St Ives Roosters rounded off their season with a home defeat against last seasons national champions Northampton Demons. The loss ended the Roosters faint hopes of clinching the third play off position in the RLC East Division.
St Ives went into the game with a depleted squad and could only name one substitute on the bench. This would prove to be their undoing as the Demons were able to replace tired legs at will where as the Roosters players had to tough it out for the full eighty minutes.
The game started brightly for the Roosters as from some controlled play in the Demons half they scored after three minutes with a try from David Sykes. Sykes returning to the side after a two match absence was able to cross close to the line after Tim Lumley – Good and Josh Dear had created a good field position from some strong drives. Matt Dear successfully converted to extend the lead.
The Demons hit back after 10 minutes with a well worked try from half way which reduced the Roosters lead to two points. This was two be the pattern of play for the next 20 minutes as Northampton took control of the game and scored a further 22 points before the Roosters hit back with a Steve Burke try which was converted by Dear. It was a similar score to the Roosters first try and pressure on the Demons line finally told as Burke squirmed over from short range.
The second half was controlled by the Demons as they ran in some set play moves to extend the lead to 44 – 12 before the Roosters were rewarded for the endeavour with a fine try by Paul Ashbridge which Dear converted. Pressure on the Northampton line led to the ball being switched to the opposite side of the field for Ashbridge to break through the line, side step the full back and score under the posts. The Demons rounded off the scoring with an unconverted try to make the final score 44 – 18.
