Match Report 2010 Season - Bury Away

Bury Titans 42 St Ives Roosters 24

A depleted St Ives Roosters team gave a gutsy display as they went down to a 42-24 defeat to Bury Titans in the Rugby League Conference, Eastern Division.

The Roosters had already been hit by player unavailability and travelled with just 13 players but their task was made harder by second-half injuries to Christopher Sykes and Ashley Eusden.

Bury opened with two quick tries. The first one was from a missed tackle in the middle of the field after 10 minutes with a second conceded a minute later after a Bury player fed the ball out of the tackle to cross under the posts.

The Roosters hit back after 20 minutes when a kick from Jamie Laing was knocked on by a Bury player. From the scrum, Tom Smith, powered over the line for a try which was converted by Jamie Laing. Bury extended their lead after 25 minutes for another converted try but the Roosters hit back just before half time as an inside ball from Jamie Laing fed James Yeomans to score. The try was converted by Laing, this made the half time score 16 – 12.

At the start of the second half the Roosters took the lead when Laing set up Adam Peel who outsprinted the Titans defence to cross the line. Laing successfully converted to give the Roosters an 18 – 16 lead.

With the Roosters down to 12 players due to a Christopher Sykes injury Bury regained the lead after 51 minutes as they scored under the posts for a converted try. The lead was extended 10 minutes later when a kick through unluckily bounced off a Roosters player on the 6th tackle for another converted try.

The Roosters hit back after 62 minutes from Tim Lumley – Good crossed close to the line for one of his trademark tries which was converted by Laing to make the score 28 – 24. Sykes returned to the field after treatment but they went back down to 12 players for the last 18 minutes as Ashley Eusden dislocated his shoulder. Things were made worse when Sykes was yellow carded after being beaten up by five Bury players with five minutes to go.

This allowed the Titans to secure the win with a further three tries to make the final score.

Roosters Coach Ian Hill commented “I was really pleased with our performance as the players battled in extremely difficult circumstances”.
