Mid Week joy

St Margaretsbury travelled to Berkhamsted on Tuesday night and produced a performance that allowed them to return with all 3 points.

In previous matches not only has it become the norm to allow the opposition a couple of goals but also the luxury of an early goal to settle them?

This was not the case on this Tuesday evening encounter. The early pressure was all Berkhamsted but The Bury Boys stood firm and aided with an excellent save on 15 minutes from Ashley Harris they were able to get to grips with their opponents 4-3-3 formation and start to become an attacking force themselves with their lively wingers Chris Bell and Davy Edmee.

With both Anthony Anstead and Leigh Rose willing to offer an outlet at all times St Margaretsbury started to become the dominate force. A clearance on 40 minutes from Berkhamsted defence was won by Ed Taylor just inside the centre circle. The header fell to Adam Lawton,. his instant control and half volley from 30 yards out had the Berkhamsted keeper hoping that his effort would clear his bar. The ground was silent, as the Bury Boys celebrated another Lawton special and a 1-0 lead.

The second half saw the back line of Ollie Sharman, Adem Salih, Tom Scriven and Ed Taylor defend as a unit and with Adam Lawton and Ricky Light providing the midfield shield the Berkhamsted players were finding it increasingly difficult to create any chances of note.

Just after the hour mark Anthony Anstead managed for the first time this season to get a quick throw to its intended target and Leigh Rose coolly slotted home his 20th goal of an impressive season, 0-2 to The Bury.

Great credit must go to the Berkhamsted players who never stopped trying to find their passes and create that chance that would get them back in the game. That chance did come on the 75th minute but from a slight lack of concentration that allowed a rare chance fall to one of their forwards but Ashley Harris was again equal to the challenge as he made another excellent save low to his left.

The Bury looked to be seeing out the game and keeping a very rare clean sheet. When with 5 minutes remaining a corner caught the defence taking a breather from the required high levels of concentration and Berkhamsted’s Dale Sears header gave them a life line 1-2.

The Bury Boys held firm and did not allow any more chances in the closing moments and the game finished 1-2 to St Margaretsbury.

This was a good team performance that can be taken into the last Home match of the season this coming Saturday against Hillingdon Borough.
