History

St. Mary’s GAA Club was formed in 1960. The first committee included Patsy McGuckin as Treasurer who is still involved in the club today.

The club started playing in the Warwickshire Junior League and in 1963 won its first major honour, the Warwickshire Junior Championship.

The club followed this in 1967 by again winning the Junior Championship and the Kennedy Cup. During the early 1970’s, due to a lack of numbers, the club was unfortunately forced to fold.

In 1992, the club was resurrected by Larry McAuliffe, Kevin Reynolds, Patsy McGuckin (all members of the old St. Mary’s) and Pat Guiton, with its first Manager being Joe Jordan, another member of the old club.

It was in 1994 that the new St. Mary’s won its first honour, the Warwickshire Junior League. The club followed this dominating Warwickshire Junior Football again winning the League in 1996, 1997 and 1998, the Kennedy Cup in 1996 and finally the Junior Championship in 1998.

The club then came very close to folding again as 18 of the 23 players of the Championship squad moved back to Ireland in a 6 month period. The club decided then to rebuild by emphasising the recruitment of locally born players to ensure its survival.

This rebuilding exercise bore fruit in 2000 when the club won its first trophy at Intermediate level, the Dominic Downey Cup. This was followed by again winning this in 2001 and winning the Intermediate League in 2001. The club had played for 4 years in the Senior grade and reached its first final, the Father Taffe Cup in 2005.

The club in 2006, due to loss of some players, decided to move down to the Intermediate grade again in order to rebuild for the future. Part of this rebuilding this year has been the successful start of Under 10 and Under 12 teams which are competing in the Warwickshire Underage Leagues.

The decision for the club to re-grade proved to be the right one with St. Mary’s winning the Warwickshire Intermediate Championship in 2006 and 2008 and the League, the Championship and the Mulligan Cup in 2010. St. Mary’s are now competing at Division 2 level and were crowned Division 2 Champions for the 2014/2015 season.
