U18s & Colts 2012-2013
Instead of full blown Colts for the Colts 2012-2013 Season St Mary's are proposing joining the Gloucester under 18 league this season. Hopefully this will;
• Guarantee fixtures. Games are being called off at the moment because there aren’t enough players available at U17, U18 & Colts in most combination clubs to field a team for each age.
• Provide a platform to play rugby for those young men who want to continue to play for their club
• Strengthen the Senior section by rebuilding the link between it and the Youth section.
It is vital to the future of the club and the game to develop players to play at senior level. We had great success last season with many young players from previous junior squads making their senior debuts in the 1st & 2nd XVs.
Sean O'reilly has agreed to coach the side. Sean is an RFU Level 3 coach.
The Under 18’s will also have;
• The full backing and support of the committee that recognises the team are second only in importance to the club to the 1st XV.
• Sponsorship. As well as the club’s main shirt sponsor, Kings Heavy Haulage, the team has already attracted sponsorship deals from two more local businesses.
• A controlled and gradual introduction to adult rugby. When players reach the required age and the coaches think they are ready, players, if they want to, will be selected to play some senior games suited to their ability.
• Transport. The club will sponsor transport to away fixtures
We already have the core of a side but to give strength and depth to the squad we need more players. I would like to invite any former St Mary’s players or anyone interested in joining, aged between 16 & 18 years at the start of this September, whatever your playing ability or experience, to join in. Any details for the first training session will be announced on the Homepage and the Under 18s page of this website.
If you want to play or are just interested in taking part it is important that we have some idea of the size and make up of the squad so it is vital that you email us your name and contact details at clubhouse@smobrugby.co.uk or sign up to the list currently on the U16 web page. Thanks.
