1st XV 2011/2012 SEASONS ROUND UP

A promising season for a young side.

1st XV ROUND UP

A promising season for a young side.

The 1st XV finished 5th in Gloucester Premier this season, over the course of the season there was only one side, Southmead whom they did not beat or draw against.

For the first time in a few seasons the 1’s successfully gained a number of bonus point wins, in fact at one stage the boys gained 4 bonus point wins on the trot.

After a tough start to the season the boys found themselves with a league record of;

Played 8 Won2 Drawn 1 Lost 5

And as a result at the wrong end of the table.

The defeat at the hands of Widden seemed to mark the turn in the season. From that point on the boys went on a 5 game winning run which included a win against Bristol Saracens 11-8, who at the time were undefeated and top of the league. The boys also gained revenge against local neighbours Frampton Cotterell with a 10-15 away win, which went some way to making amends for the 13-20 defeat at home earlier in the season.

With 13 games played the table looked a lot different;

Played 13 Won7 Drawn 1 Lost 6

Santa had indeed arrived early at Northwood Park as results in December and January were the turning point in the season. With 9 games to go in the season the boys had found that added confidence and that much sort after form.

The boys continued to play some exciting rugby and got their rewards as they put together a run bonus point victories, with wins over Old C’s, Old Richians, Widden, Tewksbury and Bishopston.

In the final 9 games of the season the boys recorded 7 wins and just 2 defeats, these were at the hands of Champions Old B’s and Runners up Southmead.

The final league record was

Played 22 Won13 Drawn 1 Lost 8

It was very much a case of ‘what if’, what if our early season form would have been better, what if Army’s drop goal would have gone over in the draw against Old B’s, what if we could have closed a couple of games out when we were on top against Drybrook, Frampton & Southmead.

I guess the final table would have been a bit different and we would have been eyeing a play off place. However that was not to be, what the boys have proved is that they are more than a match for any side in the league.

The boys must take the performances’ of post November into next season as that type of form in Champions form!
