Despite a good 1st half and a 15-0 lead Stockport were unable to contain the running of the Warrington backs in the second half and went down by 31-15 to their close rivals, who now step up to second place in the division. With the referee keeping the lid on what was becoming a bad tempered game, Stockport dominated the early exchanges and scored two tries and a penalty to go into a 15-0 lead. Warrington always looked dangerous but their error count was high and it was not until the last minute of the first half that the home side scored a try to make it 7-15 at the break. The second half was a different story, with Stockport denied any sustained possession and the dangerous Warrington backs improving their accuracy to score 3 more tries and a penalty for their bonus point victory.
Stockport were on the score board early with a Tom EATON penalty after only 2 minutes and it was only 5 more minutes before centre Rory AUSTIN scored down the blind side following a drive from a line out for 8-0. With difficult conditions neither side gained any further advantage until Stockport won a penalty as the Warrington No 8 was yellow carded for dropping a maul. Stockport opted for a scrum and their No 8 Simon GREEN picked up from the base to score. Eaton’s conversion took the visitors to 15-0 up on 30 minutes. Warrington attacked from a poor Stockport clearance kick, they were forced into touch but Stockport conceded a penalty following the line out. The kick was quickly taken and moved wide to the right for the wing to score a try, which the scrum half converted to make it 15-8 to Stockport at the break.
Despite a good start to the second half, with an early attack by Stockport it was the visitors whose accuracy deserted them and Warrington dominated the half. They added a try on 50 minuses after a good attack down the right was switched wide to the left for a converted try to bring the home side to within a point at 15-14. Stockport were finding it increasingly difficult to contain Warrington and a penalty from 30 metres put the home side ahead after 60 minutes. They added a converted try as they ran back from the kick off to go into a 24-15 lead. Stockport’s Simon GREEN was yellow carded for taking a man out in the air, despite being a man down Stockport defended well at the line out 5 metres from their line and cleared. But Warrrington were looking increasingly dangerous and a dummy by their No 10 created space for the centre to score under the posts for the final score of 31-15.
