Green, Marsland and Gaskell claim 1st XV awards.

Simon Green, Ben Marsland and Toby Gaskell scooped personal honours while Stockport’s 2nd XV’s title winning season was celebrated at the 2015 Players Awards Dinner last Friday night.

Green was voted Port’s Player of the Year whilst Marsland was selected as the stand-out-first-team performer by his team-mates and Gaskell picked up the Young Player of the Year award.

The accolades given to these players at Headlands Road were recognition for their excellent individual campaigns, despite a tough season on the pitch for the 1st XV.

The 1st XV were relegated back down to National Three North after just one season in National Two, but there was some silverware on show as the 2nd XV proudly lifted their league title after a superb second half of the season.

Off the pitch there were also other announcements which took place. President Richard Hazelhurst is stepping down and will be replaced by Mike Atkinson whilst Roger Hooley will be taking over as Director of Rugby from Mike Drew.

As well as acknowledging the efforts of the players, the Stockport Rugby Clubhouse staff (ran by Sian Fattah) were recognised for their outstanding work throughout the season. Also club physio’s Emma Batterbury, Cherene Clark and Kate Healey were mentioned for all their hard work throughout this campaign.

The 3rd and 4th XV teams also showed what Stockport Rugby Club is about with excellent speeches and superb club spirit throughout the season which shows this club can push on for the 15/16 season.

But the 1st XV awards were shown to Green, Marsland and Gaskell who have all had their part to play this campaign.

Marsland said: "I was really proud to win the players player award, it means a lot for your team to class you as a valuable member of the side.

"I was also obviously pretty surprised by it particularly as it came after my first season at Stockport ahead of some great players like Si Green and Elliot Fletcher.

"I'd like to thank the lads and coaches for welcoming me in to the squad and helping me settle and find the form that helped me achieve the award."

Gaskell added: This season has been fantastic for me as a player! I was just looking forward to playing my first season of senior rugby. My debut came as a real shock as I never expected to be playing for the first team never mind winning an award for my contributions!

“Being named as young player of the year in a team with so many awesome young players is a real honour which I am fully grateful for. I hope to continue to contribute to the team and playing at the top level.”

More reaction from the awards night and all the latest news to come on the Stockport Rugby website.
