The 3rd XV bandwagon rolls on
Ludlaim kicks nail into Ashton’s coffin
Stockport 3’s took their 4 game unbeaten league run on the road with a fixture against Ashton on Mersey 1st XV in what was to be the toughest game of the season so far. With both teams posting similar results against similar opposition it was destined to be a close affair.
The game started slowly however relentless pressure from the home side resulted in a penalty and an early 3-0 lead. Stockport were unphased by this and set siege to the Ashton line which eventually resulted in an unconverted try by centre Dave Burr and this was quickly followed by a score for fellow centre Chris Dodd which was converted by full back Nathan Ludlaim giving the visitors a 12-3 half time lead.
The second half saw Ashton draw first blood literally as they registered their opening and only try in a phase of play that saw flanker John McPherson dispatched to A&E with a large gash to his eyebrow. Again Stockport came back and quick thinking from scrum half Kyle Chapman saw him dot down after a quick tap penalty which was again conveyed by Ludlaim. Ashton tried to get back into the game but 2 killer penalties from Ludlaim ensured a 28-11 victory to a jubilant Stockport team in a hard fought but well earned victory!!
