A 2nd consecutive home win for Stockport

The 3's celebrate Macca's 50th in style (and my 42nd)!!!!

Fresh from a dazzling display of rugby against Manchester, Stockport 3rd XV welcomed Ashton On Mersey 1st XV to Headlands Road for what was guaranteed to be a physical encounter if the last match was anything to go off. With the rain abating for kick off, the game was played on a boggy surface but this did not prevent both teams from throwing the kitchen sink at each other from the off.

Being in possession of a dominant set piece always helps so it was key that the home side were on top in both the scrums and line outs. Early pressure and tactical kicking led to a mix up at the back affording chasing centre Kyle Chapman an easy try as he picked up and dropped over the line following a spillage of the ball which went unconverted. Stockport pressed on from this great start and soon doubled their lead after the aforementioned upper hand in the scrum led to captain and No.8 Andy English dotting down after the home side scrum walked Ashton back over their own line. Stockport had further opportunities to extend their lead however through a series of mistakes and bad decisions this was not to be and at half time Stockport had a slender 10-0 lead.

Onto the second half and it was Ashton who came out all guns blazing and were soon on the scoreboard after a penalty reduced the arrears to 10-3. This clearly improved the spirits of the away side coupled with Stockport making their usual ill-judged and badly timed substitutes, an Ashton converted try was then registered making it 10-10 going into the final stages with all to play for and both teams battling hard for the win. With Stockport seemingly settling back into their routine quicker, it was left for English to provide a captain's performance and score his 2nd try of the day which gave Stockport a winning 15-10 score line which they held onto until the final whistle.

A tough and hard fought encounter which was just about edged by the home side showing fight and determination to drag themselves over the finish line.
