Stockport U13’s retain the Cheshire Cup
The Warriors tie with Caldy only to lose on first try rule
With the sun shining and set fair for great flowing rugby conditions, HMS Stockport set sail from Headlands Road to make for Anselmians RUFC who were hosting the 2018 U13’s Cheshire Finals Day.
The Warriors were up first again Caldy A in the Cheshire Shield final and what a performance. The boys were already missing key players Charlie Sadler and Cameron Ratchford due to season ending injuries but to a man they played superbly and put in their greatest performance of the season. Every single player put his body on the line in a nip and tuck affair which saw the score change hands several times before Stockport took a slender 3-2 advantage into halftime. The second half continued where the first had left off with Stockport scoring to make it 4-2 before Caldy again came back to make it 4-4. Stockport again went in front but in the final moment Caldy equalised and the match ended all square at 5-5 however as per competition rules the team scoring first win the trophy which meant the Warriors were runners up by the slenderness of margins.
Onto the cup final where the A team were up against neighbours Wilmslow. Despite a disjointed first half Stockport went into the half time break 6-1 ahead however a second half injury to a Wilmslow player forced a stoppage and a change of pitch to continue the game which saw Stockport stretch further ahead despite a well worked consolation try from Wilmslow giving the A team their 3rd consecutive Cheshire Cup win.
A great day had by all and then it was onto the after party party at Casa Cooke which was the perfect end to an almost perfect day!!!
