Port advance to the next round of the Cheshire Plate
No year 9's here!
Stockport Warriors advanced to the quarter finals of the Cheshire Plate with a workman like performance over Anselmians.
The game started brightly for the Stockport boys after two early tries from Ben Perry and Tommy Kirkham set the stage for a solid Stockport win however good work from the home backline saw them pull a try back just before half time.
Stockport scored another try from the elusive Perry only for the home side to pull the score back to 3-2 from a series of pick and drives close to the Stockport line only for the Anselmians player to drop the ball in the act of scoring resulting in an absolute nil wave of objection from the Stockport boys who showed the discipline needed to win the.game.
The game was now set fair fair for either side to win when a good turnover from the Stockport forwards was fed out to the backs which was moved right to outside centre Tommy Kirkham who saw the space in front of him open up to allow him to ghost through the gap where he stood up the winger and fullback for a superb solo try to extend the score to 4-2 with 10 minutes left to play.
The last 10 minutes saw Anselmians take the game to Stockport only for some poor kicking allowing the dangerous Anselmians fullback to pull the score back before another Stockport score try took the score to a seemingly unassailable 30-20 .
With one minute left Stockport pushed forward only for a poor kick in open play to find the home full back who laid to waste the Stockport backline to pull the scores back to 30-25 to set up a nervous last minute for the Stockport team. A poor kick off from Anselmians saw the ball go dead to see the Port boys in to the Plate semi finals.
Man of the match for Stockport was a close run thing but full back Joe Harrington's nerveless securing of the high ball allied to his imperious open field running saw him help the Stockport boys secure an excellent victory.
