A Disappointing Day on the Wirral
Cheshire Cup first round.
An outing on the first team pitch with a cocktail of weather. Sunshine to lashing rain, and a testing wind for the kickers.
Stockport started slowly, and Caldy made the most of it. The tries came thick and fast from the Black and Golds, and they were soon at 22 points to nil. Stockport finally got onto the score sheet with a try from Dan in the corner. We changed ends at 27:5, and Caldy kept ticking up the points. A final result of 44 to 5 was disappointing for Stockport, but was probably a fair reflection on the day.
Looking for positives, the Stockport lads kept their heads up and worked hard throughout. There were spells of attacking play, but too much time was spent going sideways and backwards. Lots of individual performances to be proud of but not enough to make the difference.
The referee awarded Hassan with Man of the Match, which was well deserved. He demonstrated the style of play that could have brought about a different result. He was going forwards, both in attack and defence, and taking the game to Caldy. There was plenty of hard work being put in, but the challenge for the coaches going forwards is to turn that effort into a better result.
Always a pleasure to visit Caldy, so thanks to our hosts, and good luck to them in the next round.
